Building Stronger Arms Through Yoga
I was at work the other day and a co-worker of mine who takes Yoga classes suddenly started pumping a 20 pound dumbbell he had nestled in his cubicle. Being that he does this rather frequently, I asked why and his response was ?Oh, my yoga classes don?t do anything for my arms.? I looked at him puzzled and luckily for me, I had a draft of a book with photos of some yoga balancing poses and asked him if he had tried or even knew of them. Surprisingly, he said no and was now eager for me to demonstrate them to him. This made me wonder, just how many other yoga enthusiasts are of the mindset that Yoga may be inadequate for building arm strength. If you are such a person, nothing could be further from the truth. Yoga is fantastic for building strength in the arms and although you may never see your biceps bulge through your T-shirt sleeves, I will say you will see an increase in arm strength and endurance that may not occur in perhaps other forms of exercise. Moreover, some basic Calisthenics like Push-ups, the Plank and the Dive-bombers do borrow heavily from Yoga. In my opinion, if one is looking to increase strength in the arms through Yoga, the best exercises to focus on will be the one and only Sun Salutations first. From experience, when I was having difficulty holding endurance building poses such as the Wheel, Bow, Peacock and Crow Poses-with their variations-for a good enough length of time (say an average of 90 seconds and beyond), I discovered by sheer chance that in increasing the number of rounds of the Sun-Salutations (Exercises) mentioned earlier to at least 24 straight rounds, I could hold any of the poses above for a quite a while. It will be safe to say that is because the muscles are warmed up by this powerful combination of systematic poses for the otherwise moderate to strenuous demands put on them. In addition, when I started adding Hindu-push ups (a straight yoga derivative as it?s basically Downward Facing dog meets Cobra Pose repeated in sequence) for an occasional source of variety in working out, these same Sun Salutations increase my endurance to be able to perform a good amount of this Yoga-esque exercise. That considered, in addition to the Sun Salutations (24+ rounds) the other poses one should focus on for increasing strength in the arms would be the following: 1. The Wheel Pose 2. The Inclined Plane Pose 3. The Bow Pose 4. The several variations of the Peacock Pose 5. The several variation of the Crow Pose 6. The Side and Regular Plank pose In addition, to some degree, even the simple shoulder-stand when performed in conjunction with it counter poses-The Bridge and Fish pose, can definitely come in handy for using Yoga for increasing arm strength. You know what else, each of these poses also come in extremely useful for toning up the abs and offering in some cases a deep tissue massage to your visceral organs. Bet you free-weights can?t do that eh? So next time you-like my co-worker-think or run into someone who thinks Yoga can?t do much for their arms, be sure to tell whoever is applicable to try the poses above, along with the wonderful Sun Salutations. This will be a classic case of ?trying is believing?, so give this suggestion a shot and you will be almost guaranteed increase in the strength of your arms using Yoga that is-in no time. How To Make Home Acne Treatments That Work
Making home acne treatments that work is not a difficult process if you have a well stocked kitchen. You could spend thousands with a specialized doctor or acne treatment center, but the best acne treatments are those that are all natural. Consider a home made treatment today, and start fighting your acne immediately with the products you keep in your household. Try making a home acne treatment that works by making your own face wash. Mid together one millimeter of witch hazel, tea tree oil, sweet fennel oil, and essential oil of geranium. Add three hundred milliliters of water and shake. Take a cotton ball and dab your problem facial areas. This will not only clean your skin, it will also create a barrier that the acne causing bacteria cannot penetrate. If you have a current acne breakout, apply aloe vera juice at least twice a day. It can help to speed up the healing process. Another one of the best home acne treatments that work starts when you squeeze the juice of one lemon. Add an equal quantity of rose water. Apply this to your face. Let it sit for no less than thirty minutes. Wash your face with fresh, warm water. You want to repeat this process for fifteen days. After that time period, you should not experience problem acne again. If you do, repeat the entire procedure for an additional fifteen days. Massage your skin with lemon skin each night before bed. Then wash your face with lukewarm water. This will help increase the circulation to the area, thereby fighting the acne causing bacteria. Crush a garlic glove twice a day. Apply the remains to your face. While it may smell horrible, it will improve your complexion dramatically. Using one of these acne treatments that work mean you can finally face yourself in the mirror each morning without acne anxiety. How To Get Rid Of Whiteheads Can Be Answered By Knowing The Causes Of Acne
The development of acne has a very close connection with the changes in hormones. How to get rid of whiteheads also known as pimples is a major concern for thousands of people. Certain studies have noted that people suffering from pimples often have oily skin due to the high level of androgen and testosterone hormones present on the body. This is one of the causes and dermatology plays a big role in the problem. The belief on the acne and hormones connection holds that acne, which is influenced by hormones, often starts around the age of 18 to 23, thus it can affect both teens and mature women and this is why many of us are asking how to get rid of whiteheads. The connection of hormones further holds the idea that acne typically starts to appear when the body starts to produce androgen hormones which leads to pimples. It is basically the androgens that incite the sebaceous glands to enlarge and emit sebum. It is merely the blocked follicles of your skin which become the breeding area for bacteria resulting in acne also known as whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Psoriasis is another name for the problem. When asking how to get rid of whiteheads it is worth noting that hormones basically regulate every function of the body particularly the skin. The connection between acne and hormones also explains the occurrence of acne whiteheads in teens as well as in adults. In teens, it is commonly noted that during the onset of puberty, androgens are produced which holds a major role in the development of pimples. And in place of the adult, the acne and hormones are believed that the menstrual cycle of every woman plays a role in its development. Acne and progesterone are two major concepts that bothered most of the medical professionals as they talked about the causes and treatments of acne. As you may know, getting rid of whiteheads is a common chronic skin disorder that affects millions of people of every age, gender, and race. Remember you are not alone when it comes to pimples. In fact, almost ninety percent of the world?s total populations are victims of acne. This is why so many people are asking how to get rid of whiteheads. According to certain studies, acne and progesterone shows a certain connection in terms of causes and treatment for pimples. The connection between acne and progesterone appears to be more evident with the fact that progesterone is deemed as one of the factors that trigger the formation and development of acne, while others have considered that progesterone is necessary for fighting it. Many have thought that acne and progesterone are in a close bond as progesterone helps to eliminate acne. This is one of the reasons that you may see some products out there highlighting progesterone as a treatment for acne and whiteheads. However, many still deemed that progesterone is but one of the minor factors that trigger the formation of pimples and is not the only cause. Whatever the findings are, acne is but a chronic skin disorder that needs personal attention on a daily basis. Be sure to get the facts when asking how to get rid of whiteheads. Breath Awareness
The act of breathing is so natural we often take it for granted; I know for sure that I did for many years. Over the last three years of my life I have come to really appreciate the act of breathing in a way that has made a difference in how I approach every day of my life. I remember the first time I was really aware of my breath in a way that it consciously made a difference. It was about 3 years ago when I was taking a yoga class and I was in the head to knee pose called Janu Sirsasana intending that my head touch my knee while reaching for my left foot. I?d been taking this yoga course for a while and progressively had moved closer and closer to my toes, so much so that I could actually grab my foot. The ability to touch and then hold the bottom my foot took a couple of months to accomplish. On this particular day something different happened. I was looking at my knee, deep in this forward bend, holding my left foot, and I could hear the instructor softly and encouragingly saying, ?breathe into the pose, allow your breath to take you more deeply, more gently into the pose, stretch yourself just a little further?. In that moment, my nose touched my knee, and I remember a welling up inside me, and thinking to myself, ?My nose is touching my knee? for the first time in my adult life I am having face to knee contact!? As the tears welled up in my 51 year old eyes, I thought? ?Wow! If I can do this, what else could I possibly do?? This accomplishment was a first for me, and all I had to do is simply BREATHE into it. Around that time in my life I had begun to meditate regularly as well, which also calls for breath awareness. In learning to focus on my breath and the flow of it into and out of my body, I started to realize how different I felt as my breath slowed down. I became more relaxed, and a more settled peaceful feeling came over me, all by simply slowing down my breath! I found this interesting and I loved these wonderful side effects. Many times this relaxed peaceful feeling would carry into daily activities. I?ve come to rely on breath awareness to assist me in moments of stress and challenges. ?Just Breathe.? I say to myself and I recall that special time on the yoga mat and I hear my instructor?s voice softly saying, ?Just breathe into the pose?, softly, gently?. just breathe into the pose? and I think ? ?Yes, Donna, just breathe into it? that?s it?just breathe.? And I find myself immediately feeling more peaceful, more clear in my thoughts and I am able to approach the physical or emotional challenge from a much calmer state of mind. I also find when I am more focused without mental friction I am more open to receive; solutions come more easily and very often I even see the blessing in what originally felt like frustration or irritation. Today, I am fortunate to teach others how to create more balance and harmony in their lives and I?d love to share with you one of my favorite breathing exercises called Ujjayi Breathing, also known as ?sounding or ocean sounding breath?. If you follow the simple steps below so you can begin to experience the healthy benefits of breath awareness. Ujjayi breath is known to clear and calm the mind, balance the heart rate, increase mindfulness and reduce internal heat caused by frustration or irritation. Here are the simple steps: To get the hang of this practice is to first exhale the ?haaah? sound with your mouth open…imagine you are fogging up a mirror in front of your mouth. Now make a similar sound with your mouth closed, directing the outflow of air through your nasal passages. This should result in the desired breathy snoring sound. Once you have mastered it on the outflow, imagine you are fogging up a mirror in the back of your throat as you inhale gently constricting your throat. It is very simple really and the beautiful thing is that whether or not you don?t have to practice yoga or meditation to reap the healthy benefits. Just relax and breathe easily and notice the changes your awareness on your own breath brings into your life. While you practice this simple exercise take a moment to look around you and enjoy your surroundings, acknowledging how much you are a part of what is happening around you. When you start to become more aware of the simple things you may find that in that moment you realize what a gift life is, and you can more fully enjoy the present moment of what life presents to you. So the next time you find yourself in a state of confusion, anxiety, frustration or irritation whether in the office, on the road or at your local super market, etc. give yourself the gift of Ujjayi breathing! 1. Sit comfortably with your spine erect, or lie down on your back. Begin by taking a long, slow, and deeper than normal inhalation through your nostrils.
2. On the exhalation, slightly constrict your throat muscles so as you breathe out it sounds as if you are snoring. The outflow of your breath is through your nose with your mouth closed. The result is that you should sound like ?Darth Vader?.

Branches Or Basics of Yoga
Ancient practitioners have likened yoga to a living tree with six branches coming from the trunk, with each branch having its own unique function relating to a particular lifestyle. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the six darshanas of Hindu or Vedic schools and, alongside the Bhagvada Gita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika, is a milestone in the history of Yoga. Though brief, the Yoga Sutras are an enormously influential work, just as relevant for yoga philosophy and practice today, as when written many thousands of years ago. The six branches of Yoga tend to have some aspects in common and familiarizing oneself with all six will certainly help in the selection of your own yoga programme that incorporates routines that appeal from any of the six branches. Asanas or postures, Pranayama or breath control, these two disciplines along with meditation and a strict moral code are the fundamentals of the practice of yoga. Hatha Yoga Raja Yoga Though members of religious orders and spiritual communities devote themselves to this yoga branch, one does not have to embrace a monastic lifestyle to gain from the benefits of practicing Raja Yoga. Karma Yoga Bhakti Yoga Jnana Yoga Tantra Yoga In the West, the tantric path of yoga has become associated almost entirely with sexual activity. It is because of this emphasis on only one aspect of this branch that it has become misinterpreted and misunderstood by so many. It is amusing to note that, although tantra has become associated exclusively with sexual ritual, most tantric schools actually recommend a celibate lifestyle. The ?Kama Sutra? an ancient Hindu book of sexual techniques is the best known example of the lack of understanding of the true objectives of tantra yoga. A discipline that leads to a reverential attitude to even the most every day celebrations of giving and receiving, of birth and death, of achievements and of failure, and of relationships and understanding, this is a path that will appeal to westerners who enjoy being actively involved in celebrations, church going, clubs and associations and other types of ceremonies. Introduced in the 15th century by an Indian sage as a preparatory stage of physical purification to enable the body to be fit for the practice of higher meditation as in Raja Yoga, Ha means sun and tha means moon, a reference to the energy channels of the body. Fully opened energy channels allow the body to become supple enough to attain the mental disciplines of Raja Yoga. In practice, both Hatha and Raja Yoga are inter-related and dependant upon each other. Western practitioners associate yoga with the hatha branch to attain mental and physical wellbeing.
Raja translates as ?royal? and meditation is central to this branch of yoga, which has eight side branches or limbs in an order that must be strictly followed. We start with Yama meaning ethical standards, Niyama ? self discipline, asana ? posture, pranayama ? breathing control, pratyahara - sensory withdrawal, dharana ? meditation, samadhi - ecstasy or final liberation. Those inclined to introspection or meditation are best suited to Raja yoga.
The fundamental principle of Karma Yoga is that what we experience now is created by our past actions, whether in this life or a previous one. Once we understand this principal, then we can ensure all our present actions help create a future free of negativity and selfishness. To practice Karma Yoga is to lead a life of selfless service to others.
Bhakti Yoga is yoga of the heart, a branch of devotion Bhakti is the Sanskrit term for selfless love of God and mankind. Bhakti principles are universal and common to many world religions. By following the path of bhakti we learn to channel our emotions, accept and have tolerance for all those that cross our path.
This is the branch of knowledge, the yoga of the mind and is both the most difficult and the most direct of the six branches. It is yoga of the mind, of wisdom, the path of the sage or scholar. The practitioners of Jnana Yoga develop their intellects by intensive study, particularly but not confined to, the yoga tradition and other spiritual teachings. This is the path that most appeals to the intellectuals pursuing the practice of yoga. Within the context of our Western religious traditions, Kabalistic scholars, Jesuit priests, and Benedictine monks epitomise Jnana Yogis.
Tantra, from the Sanskrit ?to weave? or ?loom?, is the branch of yoga that practices ritual as a means of experiencing the divine in all our activities. Probably, the most misunderstood or misinterpreted of all the yogas, tantra, the sixth branch, is the pathway of ritual, an in tantric practice; we experience the Divine in everything we do. A reverential attitude is, therefore cultivated, encouraging a ritualistic approach to life. In essence, tantra is the most esoteric of the six major branches and appeals to those yogis who enjoy ceremony and relate to the feminine principle of the cosmos, which they call Shakti.
You do not have to limit yourself to one expression, but can practice hatha yoga, taking care of your physical body, while simultaneously cultivating the lifestyle of a Bhakti Yogi, expressing compassion for everyone you meet. Whichever, avenue of yogic expression draws your interest; it will probably be the right yoga path for you.

Brahmacharya
Brahmacharya is the fourth of the yamas and the word, literally translated means ?dedicated to the Divinity of Life?. The word is often used in yogic practice to refer to celibacy or denying pleasure, but this is only a small part of what Brahmacharya represents. The purpose of practicing Brahmacharya is to keep you focused on your purpose in life, the things that instill a feeling of peace and contentment Historically, Brahamacharya as celibacy was likely a product of teaching yoga to young men, whose desires can be difficult to harness. Unless you are living the ascetic life of a sadhu, chances are you will indulge in sexual pleasure, food pleasure or any number of possible treats. To bring brahmacharya into your life and yoga practice is to practice moderation in all things, including those things that are pleasurable distractions. When we become hooked on pleasure, it becomes an addiction and the absence of pleasure feels like loss or dissatisfaction; we become unable to enjoy the simple happiness of life, to observe the quiet broad beauty of our minds - slowing down becomes difficult because the focus becomes the object of addiction. Practicing moderation allows us to enjoy pleasure and remain focused on our greater purpose. . How does this relate to asana practice? Sometimes yoga students push themselves in yoga practice, creating a sense of urgency, ?correctness? (am I doing this pose well?) and anxiety. This can leave a student feeling exhausted at the end of their practice rather than feeling relaxed or refreshed and ready for purposeful action off the mat. It is important to apply moderation to moderation also, so it is not a burden. It is a beautiful practice. It is about moderating the extremes, not wanting too much and being happy with what you have. The practice of Wanting Wanting Wanting will always leave you feeling unsatisfied. Brahmacharya can bring out many issues and energies as you begin to observe moderation - our addictions and ego rebel strenuously when they are not in control. When they arise, notice what the issues are, go deeper into your practice and discover your true motivations. Ask yourself what is your purpose in your yoga practice? What are your goals in yoga and do you allow space in your practice to reach those goals? In yoga, Jenn
